Dura Mater – “Tough Mother”, outer layer, protects the brain, partially attached to the skull to secure the brain so it does not move.
Arachnoid – “Spider-like”, middle layer, laced with blood vessels, attached to Dura, the cerebral-spinal fluid is in between the Arachnoid and the Pia.
Pia Mater – “Soft Mother”, innermost layer, closely adheres to the brain, laced with blood vessels, brains main supply of nutrients

Epidural – bleeding between the skull and the dura
Subdural – collection of blood on the surface of the brain Subarachnoid – collection of blood between the brain and the Pia
